JPC Speakers Day 2002You are Cordially Invited to Attend the Annual JPC "SPEAKERS DAY" Saturday, November 2, 2002 Holiday Inn North - Newark International Airport - Newark, NJ The Joint Presidents Council of the metropolitan New York Area presents the 20th anniversary of its highly acclaimed “Speakers’ Day” featuring talks by leading orchid authorities from all parts of the world. The daylong event will highlight four outstanding speakers; orchid plant and book sales, raffle of fine plants; morning refreshments and a complete lunch, all included in the registration price of $35.00. COME MEET, HEAR AND TALK WITH THESE INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED SPEAKERS: LAURENS GROBLER , from South Africa. Laurens has been growing orchids since the age of 10. Together with his wife he owns Afri-Orchids, a nursery specializing in orchid species of the region. He has traveled extensively to photograph and study the orchid flora of southern Africa and worked with local conservation a uthorities to determine the status of South Africa’s orchids. Laurens is presently the youngest accredited judge of the South African Orchid Council. His talk will be on the orchids of southern Africa. He will bring a selection of plants to sell KEVIN HIPKINS , from Sydney, Australia. Kevin started with orchids at the age of 12 and has not stopped for 40 years. He continues the orchid business that his parents started, Royale Orchids, as a backyard nursery. Today Royale Orchids has three acres of orchids under cultivation in a 38-acre property at Peats Ridge, a suburb of Sydney, specializing in Cymbidiums, but they grow most other genera. His talk will be on “The Stars of 2002”, a resume of mixed genera seedlings that flowered over the current season. He will be bringing plants to sell. ANDRES MADURO , from Panama. Andres was born in New York City but has lived most of his life in Panama where he owns an orchid nursery, Finca Dracula, with 150,000 plants encompassing about 150 different species and hybrids. One of his many specialties are the warmer growing Telipogons of Central America. He will talk on the orchids of Panama. He will also be bringing plants to sell. Dr. KEVIN PORTER , R from California. Kevin has been growing and hybridizing Paphiopedilums for the last twenty years. He owns Curved Air, an orchid nursery, in Santa Maria California. He is a world known hybridizer and speaker on Paphs, and has been a regular speaker at The Paph Guild for the last 14 years. His topic will be “The Evolution and Innovation in the Contemporary Paphiopedilum.” He will bring a small selection of plants to sell. "Speakers Day" will begin with morning refreshments and the opening of the sales room at 8:30 a.m. Introductions will take place at 10:00 a.m. followed by the morning speakers. Luncheon will be at 12:30 p.m. followed by the afternoon speakers at 1:30 p.m. The day will conclude with a raffle at 4:00 p.m. The sales room will close at 4:30 p.m. A Special Plant for Early Registration There will be a special raffle for those registering early: a blooming size division of Cattleya walkeriana semi-alba ‘Tokyo #1’, possible the best semi alba in the world today. This Cattleya can be successfully grown in the home. Register before August 31 and you will receive 12 raffle tickets; before September 30, six tickets; and before October 30, three tickets ADVANCED REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Driving Instructions to the Holiday Inn-North, Newark International Airport New Jersey Turnpike, exit 14 to Newark Airport. After paying the toll stay to the right. Take the second right exit marked "Frontage Road". At the end of the exit ramp make a left turn, pass the Sheraton Hotel on the right to the Holiday Inn-North. There is also regular bus service on New Jersey Transport Buses to Newark Airport from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan. Take the Holiday Inn-North shuttle van from the airport terminal to the hotel.
