GLOSSARY

mericlone, meristem: a plant propagated by chemical stimulation of excised shoot tissue, each cell of which gives rise to a plantlet. Not every plantlet may be identical to the mother plant, owing to mutations. Some mutants are actually better than the mother plant, but most are not.

Mericlones are generally a good value for beginners or those with limited budgets or space, since they are a "known" quantity. Be warned, though, genes are not everything! If you don't grow the plant well, it will not perform as well as it can and may not resemble the "original" plant (or the picture in the catalog).
