Affiliated Groups

The Manhattan Orchid Society is affiliated with several important national and local orchid societies and groups. We share a common goal of promoting education about orchids and encouraging orchid-growing skills, as well as share a deep concern for the welfare and conservation of the natural environments to which orchids are native.

American Orchid Society

MOS is an Affiliated Society of the American Orchid Society. We retain affiliated status by having a sufficient number of members who are also AOS members. We have an AOS Representative who serves as liason and source of information. We encourage every serious beginner to join the AOS.

The AOS publishes several periodicals, most notably the AOS Orchids, world famous for its monthly issues packed with articles covering a wide range of topics, color photos, the latest orchid-world news, and plenty of advertisements featuring orchid nurseries and orchid products from all over the world. Other benefits of membership include discounts on books and videos purchased through AOS. In addition, the AOS sponsors education and conservation efforts concerning orchids and orchid habitats—many of which are, unfortunately, severely endangered by human activity.

The AOS also has an extensive orchid judging program. The Northeast Regional Judging takes place at the Hampton Inn, Elmsford NY on the 3rd Saturday of each month.

The AOS will be dedicating it's new headquarters in March 2001. MOS is proud to have contributed to the building fund, as well as other important AOS programs.

Other Orchid Groups

Orchid Digest Corp.

We are also a member society of the Orchid Digest Corporation. Orchid Digest is a beautiful full-color quarterly magazine. Its articles on habitats, collecting and cultivation are high-caliber. The current editor is Ernest Heatherington.

Joint Presidents Council

MOS is a member of the Joint Presidents Council, an organization of orchid societies from the tri-state area. Each fall, the JPC sponsors Speakers Day, an event which features an international array of speakers along with plant sales, raffles and luncheon.
